By doing combos, you can charge a hero meter that allows you to pull off a more damaging special attack. You have your basic chains, combos that end with an area effect or sequences that juggle an opponent in the air. You start out with a set of basic combos that can change depending on which combination of weak and strong attacks you press. The base gameplay, meanwhile, should be familiar to Warriors fans. I can only assume it’s a conscious decision on where to invest limited resources. This is a longstanding issue with Warriors’ offshoot games, which typically don’t invest the same care and attention to detail on the stages that serve as a canvas to the game’s character models. In contrast to the excellent character models and nice-looking attacks of the game, however, its environments and stages look lackluster.

In fact, the first time I saw them in the opening movie without any context, I tried to jar my mind about which Fire Emblem game they appeared in because they looked familiar but I couldn’t quite place where they came from. Now, if there’s one thing that developer Omega Force always nails with its Warriors games, it would be the character models. Inspired by Nintendo’s popular tactical RPG series, the game brings several fan-favorite characters into the fold and gives them the familiar Warriors treatment, all the while retaining some elements that Fire Emblem fans will instantly recognize. This brings us to Fire Emblem Warriors for the Nintendo Switch. Dragon Quest Heroes and Dragon Quest Heroes 2 added RPG elements as well as the ability to summon monsters to fight with you. Hyrule Warriors, which I described as “deep-fried caviar” and is my favorite Warriors offshoot to date, starts out with a bang by having you take on a moving ginormous boss while adding lots of Zelda charm. To combat that tired feeling, the series has tried to add new twists here and there, particularly for its more nontraditional offshoots. Then again, you can only unceremoniously dump a gaggle of foes and run from map to map so many times before the formula gets stale.
